It is with great pleasure we welcome Scottish guitarist David King to KJAZZ Radio UK. David’s music has been described as stylish jazz infused pop. However it goes beyond that as his songs contain influences from not only Pat Metheny and Larry Carlton but also rock elements similar to that of U2’s ‘The Edge‘ infused into his music. King creates a sonic landscape with his music and has a keen interest in writing music for films, following a similar career path to that of Robert Fripp. David holds a degree in Media Music Composition, recognized by the Film Music Institute of Los Angeles.
Glasgow is one of those places that inspires music with venues like The Apollo. Average White Band, Mark Knopfler, and members of AC/DC all hail from this Scottish city. Growing up with this background of proud Scottish musical heritage and attending concerts featuring a number of guitar legends further inspired David, who had originally picked up the guitar at the age of eight. While many boys get involved with guitar because it is ‘cool’, few develop the passion that King has and carry that forward to produce a collection of highly acclaimed CD’s which are played on various stations around the world.
About his playing style, Guitar Player Magazine has said ” King’s round tone and sensitive phrasing is inspired and he elevates the guitar to a near mystical place.” We agree with this statement. From soulful melodies to edgier ambient textures, King’s music will absorb you and take you on a musical journey which will keep you interested throughout. The journey awaits and you can start with a number of different CD’s. King’s latest CD at time of writing is “Flying Colours”, which follows up on the hugely successful “The Universal Dream” which has been on the playlists in Canada and the US and also here in the UK. “Flying Colours” launched in 2013 (his current CD at time of writing) and is the fourth CD by King. From pure smooth jazz to rock style drum accompaniments “Flying Colours” has something for everyone and can be listened to as background or you can crank up the sound and enjoy the full expressive horns on songs like ‘Road Trip’.
In summing up, King’s music explores many genres in his composition. There is a lot of smooth jazz in his work but he also explores garage and rock guitar and fuses them with drums and horns in his musical composition that presents the listener a selection of songs to suit their every mood.
Comments and what others are saying about David King
“King’s round tone and sensitive phrasing is inspired and he elevates the guitar to a near mystical place.” – Guitar Player Magazine
“David’s style is unique, why? Because he makes his guitar sing every note almost making you feel his music is in 3D while he indulges us with his sublime rock/smooth jazz licks.” Norrie Lynch – smoothjazzinthemix.
“Road Trip is a tune for all occasions. If you have it on quiet it’s a quality smooth jazz track but fire it up on a loud system it’s a different track altogether! The “IN YA FACE” horns and almost garage style drums set up the “Phil Upchurch/Lee Ritnour” guitar which takes the tune to another place! Love It!” Paul “Bumski ” Redfern – envisionradio.
